LIGHTS… CAMERA… HORNS!
Man… I love a horn section. While I’ve spent a big part of my professional life as a soloist, my heart truly lies with playing in a killer horn section. There’s nothing that’ll give me chills faster or make the hair on the back of my neck stand up like a killer horn section just slammin’ it home on some classic R&B or funk. Here’s a few tracks I produced with a friend of mine a few years ago when I auditioned for Tower. I had a lot of fun writing, producing and recording these tracks.
SONG FOR MIKE
Michael Brecker died on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at age 57 from leukemia and I feel like a little piece of me has died as well. Funny, in that I knew Michael only from afar, having met him on several occasions at his gigs and through mutual friends. I knew (and know) his music on a much more intimate level. I have spent the better part of 25 years trying to figure out what the hell he was doing. And more pressingly, HOW the hell he was doing it! As a saxophonist, he was unequalled and truly was the logical extension of ‘Trane. I think there are few that would argue the technical genius of Michael’s saxophone or EWI playing. I can’t imagine many would argue his melodic lyricism or his poignant, cryingly vocal sound. He was certainly unmistakable and everything he touched seemed to take on a mysticism and magic. He definitely had “that” gift, however it is defined…
I wrote and recorded this piece in honor of Michael.
FILM & TV
I have always enjoyed composing for a variety of mediums and have on occasion written for film and television. The tracks here were written for the 2006 CBS Master’s Golf Tournament and represent some of my writing for orchestra.
NEW YORK HORNS
New York Horns is a horn section I started with my great friend and business partner, Chris Anderson. We’ve been making music together for over 15 years, and have written, recorded and performed together for dozens of projects, albums, live performances and for our own enjoyment and pleasure. Here’s several examples of different kinds of things we do as a writing, performing and producing team:
Tunnel Vision – EP – Our debut EP from 1999. One of the most downloaded and distributed music projects during mp3.com’s heyday in the late 90′s.
PRODUCTION MUSIC VOL 1: Brass Kickers
In the early 2000′s we began writing for film and tv. Here’s one of the sets of production music we recorded.
PRODUCTION MUSIC VOL 2: Jockumentary
Yet more sports themed production music…
New York Horns Christmas
Here’s a couple of tracks we produced in the spirit of the season. Ok. Well, sort of…
GROUP THERAPY
In the late 90′s I spent quite a bit of time touring and performing with a New York band called the Illuminati. I met some very creative and interesting people through the band and started GROUP THERAPY to explore our common musical interests.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Over the past many years, I have recorded a Christmas song as a way of sharing my first love and passion – music – with my friends and family. Happy Holidays!
