Hello friends! Summer is here… And how! As I write this it’s about 110° in my NY apartment, but it is a beautiful day outside. If I could just get the super to turn off the heat in the building, we’d be just great!
Speaking of heat, Southside put on some fantastic shows in May. The band is kickin’ and is just sounding awesome. After four months (has it really been that long already?) in the band, I’m starting to find my footing and have a clue of what’s going on around me. Watching and listening to these guys from inside the band is a real blast – what a great group of personalities. Never a dull moment!
Every now and then I get to do something outside the norm. I played a show at the Bitter End with Live Funk Nouveau, which was just a load of fun. Made up of musicians I have known and played with for over 15 years, it was a great homecoming of sorts of my favorite musicians in NY. The music – all Tower of Power – was just fun to play and the band killed it! The crowd was full of familiar faces, many of which I hadn’t seen in years, so the gathering of souls in that room, as well as the enthusiasm and love for the music and musicians – was just transcendant. A wonderful evening. Any time you are blessed to make music with friends, it is a good day…
And speaking of friends, I got the chance to play with Scott Burrow’s band, The Scott Burrow’s 5!ve at the Underground. If you haven’t heard Scott’s band, do yourself a favor and go check it out. It’s a fun, trippy evening of fun, trippy tunes done in a fun and trippy way! And he’s always got stellar musicians with him, so it ALWAYS sounds fantastic.
This month I’ll be doing two shows with the legendary Temptations. I’ll be in Richmond, VA on June 14th and Huntington, WV on June 15th playing with a 10-piece horn section made up of players from my hometown of Greensboro, NC. The Temps sound fantastic, so if you’re local to either show, don’t miss it! It’s always a good show and a treat to play with my “homeboys.”
There’s a couple of really cool gigs in store for SSJ this month! June 1st will see us at BB Kings in NYC. This is one of the rare shows in NYC for Johnny that are open to the public, so if you can make it out, don’t miss this one. BB’s is a good sounding, good sized venue – perfect for Johnny, and the band has a great time there. At the end of the month, we go to England for the Manchester (June 28) and London (June 29) blues fetivals. I love England and am psyched to do two of my favorite things simultneously – travel overseas and play music. I get paid to do this? It still amazes me…
